Traffic Accident and Road Closure I-475 South

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division is investigating a single vehicle traffic accident which occurred at approximately 5:15 AM this morning on Interstate 475 South at mile post one.
Azem Jakupaj of St. Petersburg, Florida stated that he lost control of his 2002 Freightliner when an unknown driver in a passenger car swerved into his lane. The semi overturned and all lanes of the interstate, including the emergency lanes, were blocked during the recovery effort. Jakupaj was not injured.
Bibb Sheriff’s Patrolmen assisted by members of Middle Georgia REACT closed off I -475 South between Eisenhower Parkway and the I-75 merger near Hartley Bridge Road. Traffic was re-routed east and west on Eisenhower Parkway until approximately 10:00 AM when the interstate we re-opened. The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department HAZMAT team removed diesel fuel from the roadway which spilled from the fuel tanks on the semi. The tractor trailer was hauling non hazardous canned goods. Archer Western Contractors with the interstate construction project also assisted in the clean-up.
